PONY Baseball and Softball is designed to “Protect Our Nation’s Youth” by providing experiences in youth baseball and softball that will help young people grow into healthier and happier adults.

PONY is an acronym for Protect Our Nation’s Youth. The concept for the name originally came from boys at the local YMCA in Washington, Pennsylvania and stood for “Protect Our Neighborhood Youth,” but when PONY became an international program in the early 1950’s “Neighborhood” was switched to “Nation’s.”

Thank you for choosing Seal Beach PONY and celebrating the Season Opening Day with us.  Your Coaches and Team Parents will have more information as Opening Day approaches. Traditionally, every team gathers for an opening ceremony in the morning, including the ceremonial First Pitch, and every team plays their first game/scrimmage.

Seal Beach PONY Baseball welcomes players of all levels of experience at all of our divisions. Each year we welcome new players who learn, play, and have fun along side returning players. Prior experience is not a requirement for joining the older divisions.

Bat – get the right size and fit that feels good for your child. You want your child to swing the bat without it being too heavy or too light. The barrel of the bat should not exceed 2 5/8 around. The length and weight of the bat is personal preference for you child. Only t-ball players’ bats can be stamped with a t-ball designation. (Read more about PONY bat rules)
Glove – get the right fit for your child. You child’s hand should fit comfortably in the glove and not have any of his/her hand sticking out.
Cleats – for t-ball feel free to buy cleats for your player, but tennis shoes are completely acceptable.
Helmet – Helmet are sized like a baseball cap size. Have your child try on the helmet to get the right fit. You don’t want the helmet to be too loose otherwise it will fall off when they hit and run to the bases.
Baseball Bag – this is a great idea to keep all their equipment together so nothing gets lost, and helps them with responsibly when old enough to be in charge of their own equipment.

Each coach will be responsible for scheduling their own teams’ practice during the week. Depending on your division, you might have one 1-hour practice per week for lower divisions, or multiple days during the week for higher divisions.

All divisions will have games on Saturdays, unless your team has a “bye” that week or are rained out. Pinto, Mustang, and Bronco divisions will also have week-day games, and Shetland teams may be scheduled for some weekday games if needed. Schedules will be created closer to Opening Day as teams are formed based on registration totals.

• SB PONY will make “game day” decisions about canceling games. Always assume your game will be played.
• Check the home page, Twitter, and Facebook, at 2 PM on weekdays and 8 AM on Saturday’s for the latest information on field conditions and if games will be played.
• If the weather changes after 2 PM or 8 AM on a Saturday, then the coaches may postpone the game.

• T-Ball and Shetland – It is not necessary to make up games. Coaches may reschedule their game if they wish. The two coaches can work with their respective commissioner to find a time suitable for a make up game.
• Pinto – If the game does not count toward the league standings, then it is not necessary to make up the game. If the game does count toward the league standings, then the coaches will work with the Pinto commissioner to reschedule the game.
• Mustang – Coaches will work with the Mustang commissioner to reschedule the game.

• If the fields are closed due to heavy rains, then all practices are canceled. Field conditions are posted on the home page of this web site.
• If the fields are open but there is a light rain or if the fields are wet, then it is the coach’s decision if the team will practice. If the coach cancels the practice, then the coach and team parent must contact all team members. If the fields are wet, then coaches should only practice on the grass. There is no practicing on the dirt if the dirt is wet.
